This group in Norway was building a replica of the Gokstad. Having lived in Alaska for 6 years, I can relate to working in the snow. This photograph certainly demonstrates the stamina of the Scandinavian peoples. You will notice the rocks inside the ship, used to maintain the outward shape of the hull. Also worthy of note is the fact that the stem is a carved log incorporating the foundation for attaching the planking. There are detailed shipbuilding instructions in the section titled: 'Viking Ship Building Methods,' a detailed analysis of the shipbuilding methods of the Vikings on the Gokstad and other Viking ships. The 'Contents' bar contains links to other pages, relevant sites and additional information on the Gokstad Viking ship plans. For information on nonprofits and the program we are currently working on to help breach the 'Digital Divide' visit the Merisol Services home page.
